The Fuchi & Kashira , or in plain English the metal pommel and collar, often very decorative and are found at the handle’s extremities.
During the process of making the saya, the fuchi is playing a very important role. With the skatan sheathed, the Fuchi is placed over the Nakago (the iron part of the blade that is going into the tsuak (handle) on the mouth of the Saya (Sayaguchi ) to determine the approximate thickness and shape and of the Saya. However, the finished Saya will always be slightly thicker than the diameter of the Fuchi.
